Fairchild graduate students Jonathan Flickinger and Nichole Tiernan have each received a Botany in Action Fellowship from Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Garden in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Jonathan and Nichole are studying plant systematics at FIU in the Department of Biological Sciences (major advisor Prof. Javier Francisco-Ortega). Each fellowship includes a $5,000 grant to support their research projects on Caribbean plants, which they plan to use for field work in Cuba. Related outreach activities will train Biotech high school and FIU undergraduate students in botanical research, and will educate Miami-metro area teachers on Caribbean plants. Jonathan and Nichole are also scheduled to attend Science Engagement Week at Phipps where they will receive training on communicating scientific research to the public. Field work in Cuba will be done in partnership with Dr. Ramona Oviedo and Dr. Lisbet González (Instituto de Ecología y Sistemática de Cuba) and Garden herbarium curator Dr. Brett Jestrow.
